Exporting from the Toool App: WAV, Stems and MIDI

From phone to computer

Many musicians use the Toool app as an idea notebook: you write a groove on the train, find a chord progression on the sofa, then finish the track in the studio. To do that you need to get the music out of the app. Here's how.

Exporting is a feature of the PRO version.

The three types of export

Stereo mix (WAV)

The whole track in a single WAV file. Ideal for listening to your idea elsewhere, sending it to a collaborator or singing over it in another app.

Stems (WAV)

One WAV file per instrument: drums, bass, chords and so on. This is the option to choose to properly mix the track in your DAW with your own plugins.

MIDI

A MIDI file containing the notes of your sequence. You can then replay the chord progression or bassline with your computer's virtual instruments.

Step by step

1. Finish your track in the app (structure, levels in the mixing console).
2. Choose the export: stereo mix, stems or MIDI.
3. Share the file through your phone's share sheet: email, AirDrop, a storage service and so on.
4. Save it straight away: the app doesn't keep a permanent export folder.
5. Import it into your DAW: Ableton Live, Logic Pro, FL Studio, Cubase, Pro Tools…

In the DAW

• Set the project tempo to the track's tempo before importing, so stems and MIDI land on the grid.
• Place all the stems at the start of the session: they all begin at the same moment.
• Mix: compression with Anodyn, colour with Anadrive, space with Reverbia.
• Record vocals in the DAW: the app doesn't record audio.

Backing up your projects

Not to be confused with audio export: Toool projects (.toool files) contain no audio or MIDI, only your settings and arrangements. They're stored on the device with no cloud sync. Use "Export All Projects" to create a ZIP and email it to yourself: that's your backup, and the way to get your projects onto another device with "Import Project".
